Iamblichus on Theurgy as the Only Road to Happiness

This PhD project explores how Iamblichus answers Porphyry's critical questions about theurgy as the human road to happiness.

Iamblichus on theurgy as the only road to happiness

Iamblichus successfully incorporates theurgy in Neoplatonic philosophical life by means of carefully anchoring it in philosophical debates current in Platonic circles in his day, and in an elaboration of Neoplatonic metaphysics and epistemology. Tummers thus shows how Iamblichus set received philosophical theory and religious practice on a new footing. Her dissertation aims at improving on the prevailing interpretation of Iamblichus' philosophy.
